Data Collection & Tools

Updated: Aug 2, 2020

When collecting data, no two tools are the same...

Data collecting tools are based on the data that you would like to collect. Listed below are different devices that can be used to collect data and other important information.

(a) Antecedent: The cause of the behavior to occur.

(b) Behavior: Behavior must be observable, identified, and able to asses/evaluate.

(c) Consequence: The positive or negative outcome/result/ that follows the behavior.

(d) Setting/Locus: Location the behavior was observed.

(e) Time of day: Can be identified by time; morning, afternoon, or night.

(f) Duration: The length of time the behavior lasted.

(g) Frequency: How often the behavior occurred.

(e) Latency: The time it takes for a behavior to occur.

Data collecting tools

When selecting a tool to use for data collection, it is critical to specify the behavior and the function, what may cause, the behavior. Behavior must be observable, measurable, and specific to effectively assess and continuously evaluate.

A checklist with specific steps on how to implement/use these data collection tools.

  1. Administer diagnostic test or notes on behavior and collect results

  2. Student's weak area(s) must be identified based on their results

  3. Identify purpose/reason for collecting data

  4. Select the appropriate data tool to implement

  5. Identify goal and expectations for the student

  6. Continuously track data overtime (Weekly or monthly)

  7. After tracking data, discuss findings and progress with the student and parent(s)

  8. Communicate progress or regressions with student during data chats

  9. Place data and results in student folder to present during meetings

  10. If the behavior is severe/harmful to self or others, please seek additional professional help from an applied behavior analysis (ABA) or the school counselor.

*A combination of different tools are acceptable to use. For example, using anecdotal records with the duration form is another way to express and explicitly explain detailed information.*
